This years Winter Gashuku was another fabulous weekend with students travelling from around the UK to enjoy excellent training and the infamous fancy dress party. This year we were privileged to have  senior Sensei's; Kevin Leigh Renshi 7th dan (SKKIF), Colin Needham 6th dan (WTKO), James Atkins 5th dan (East coast) Bob Jennings 5th dan (SKKIF) and Paul Filenczuk 5th dan (SKPF)

Kodokai were honoured to host Nobuaki Kanazawa Kancho 8th dan at their dojo in Watford, it was fantastic training with Kancho and it was a privilege to have a visit to Watford included on his latest European tour

Despite the Pandemic with stringent safety measures a very successful International Gashuku was again held in Hemsby, Norfolk with students from around the UK. This years senior instructors  included sensei Kevin Leigh, Colin Needham, Peter Crawford, Sharon Thompson, James Atkins and Paul Filenczuk. The training was varied covering many different locations with the usual mix of Karate and team events all geared to the the government guide lines on distancing.

 2019 November - Shinji Tanaka at Kodokai dojo (Photo tour)      
It was a great pleasure to have Sensei Shinji Tanaka 7th dan from the SKIF Honbu dojo in Tokyo Japan visit Kodokai dojo. It was his first visit to Watford and everyone thoroughly enjoyed his vast knowledge and technical ability. Shinji was 3rd in the World championships in 1994, 2nd place SKI World champion in 1997 & 2003 and SKI Japan champion 9 times.

 2017 June - Czech Republic tour    (Photo tour) 

Renshi Kevin Leigh and students from Kodokai Karate club were special guests on the 12th Kodokai course hosted by Brno SKIF. The course this year was helped by instructors Colin Needham, Kamil Guzek, Ben Gill and Vit Stencil. This annual  course has now established itself in the Czech karate calendar with students coming from all over Czech to train with the UK sensei's.
 
 2017 - April - SKKIF National championships   (Photo tour) 
This years SKKIF National championships were held in Wigan and hosted by sensei Mark Winstanley and his Senshi dojo. Kodokai sent a squad of 18 who did fantastic winning 25 medals including 10 gold and winning for the first time the Kanazawa cup for team kumite. Excellent results for all Kodokai students who participated.

Kodokai Karate club were honoured to host Kancho Nobuaki Kanazawa 7th dan, eldest son of Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa, at their Kodokai dojo in Watford. Over 100 students had the privilege of training with Kancho over the weekend and surely a weekend they will fondly remember.

The course this year was helped by assistant instructors from SKIF Czech. This annual  course has now established itself in the Czech karate calendar with students coming from all over Czech to train with the UK sensei's.

Kodokai Karate club were honoured to host newly elected Kancho Nobuaki Kanazawa 6th dan son of Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa who has now retired from World travel. This year sees the first of many future visits of Nobuaki Kancho in his new role and we welcome him once again to the UK .

 2012 May - Kancho Kanazawa and Nobuaki Kanazawa Kodokai dojo   (Photo tour) 

Kodokai Karate club were honoured to have Kancho Kanazawa 10th dan and his son Nobuaki 6th dan at what was possibly the last time ever that Kancho will ever teach here. SKIF Japan have announced his retirement from Worldwide travel this year which will see the last of the most famous Karate Instructor in the World coming to the UK. A very sad day but his legacy will carry on with SKKIF and all the clubs and students who have been inspired by the teachings of Hirokazu Kanazawa.

Sensei's Kevin Leigh (Kodokai), Colin Needham (Red Sun) and Ivor Garner (East Coast karate) were this year guests of honour at the annual Czech course hosted by Plzen SKIF. The course was attended by students from all over Czech with assistant instructors from Manchester, Watford and Norwich. This year we were taken to the amazing UNESCO recognised town of Cesky Krumlov.

This years Winter Gashuku was the biggest ever with 80 students travelling from around the UK to enjoy excellent training and a great weekend . This year we were privileged to have  Sensei's; Kevin Leigh 6th dan (SKKIF), Colin Needham 5th dan (Red Sun), Ivor Garner 5th dan (East coast), Steve Marriot 4th dan (SKKIF) and Carlos Joachim 2nd dan.
 
 2011 November - Kancho Kanazawa and Fumitoshi Kanazawa Kodokai dojo  (Photo tour) 

Kodokai were once again honoured to host Kancho Kanazawa 10th dan and his son Fumitoshi 5th dan. This was sensei Fumitoshi's second visit to the UK but one that left an lasting impression with all that trained with him. A SKIF grading with Kancho followed the course with eligible Kodokai students all passing. Well done to Cary Leigh who was awarded 2nd dan, Paul Gray 2nd dan, Ben Pritchard 3rd dan, Phil King 3rd dan and Sensei Kevin Leigh achieving his 6th dan.

 2011 May - Sensei Ryusho Suzuki at Kodokai dojo   (Photo tour) 

Kodokai Karate club were honoured to have sensei Ryusho Suzuki 6th dan SKIF visit us on only his second ever visit to the UK. Sensei taught Gojushiho-dai with precise detail to specific parts of the Kata We all look forward to his next visit and are sure Kodokai made an excellent impression on him as he did on us.

Sensei's Kevin Leigh (Kodokai), Colin Needham (Red Sun) and Ivor Garner (East Coast karate) were this year guests of honour at the annual Czech course hosted by Haradek Kralove SKIF. The course was attended by students from all over Czech with assistant instructors from Manchester, Watford and Norwich. This annual  course has now established itself in the Czech karate calendar with students coming from over 200km to train with the UK sensei's.

 2010 November - Kancho Kanazawa Farewell week Watford   (Photo tour) 
SKIF Tokyo announced that Kancho Kanazawa was to retire from World travel and to celebrate his life time achievement a week of engagements at SKKIF clubs in the UK was arranged. To finish, a Farewell course at Woodside Leisure Centre in Watford was hosted by Kodokai Karate club with over 500 students from the UK and Europe in attendance. We were also honoured to have Kancho's sons Nobuaki 6th dan and Daizo 5th dan, with sensei Ohigashi 6th dan JKA and sense Kato 8th dan IJKA.

Kodokai Karate club where honoured to host a night with 'Kancho designate' Nobuaki Kanazawa 6th Dan SKIF at Watford leisure centre. Over 80 students attended and were treated to a master class in Shotokan Karate with sensei Kanazawa.

The course was attended by students from all over Czech with students from Manchester, Watford and Norwich coming too. The course was a fantastic success with marvellous hospitality from the SKIF Karate club of Plzen.

 2009 July - SKIF World championships    (Photo tour) 
Sensei Leigh captained the SKKIF  squad at the 10th SKIF World championships held in Greece, Athens. Achieving one Gold one Silver and one Bronze, we did particularly well especially against such superb competition from over 6o competing countries.

Kancho Kanazawa and Nobuaki Kanazawa once again taught at one of the largest UK courses to be held in the UK this year. With students from around the world the course was  another great success which was followed by the SKIF grading where  Kodokai students all successfully passed their Grades.

 
 2009 May - Kancho Kanazawa No Bo Yudansha at Kodokai dojo   (Photo tour) 

The Kodokai Dojo in Watford was the venue for the first Kanazawa No Bo training course in the UK with Kancho Kanazawa, Nobuaki Kanazawa and from SKIF Ireland special guest instructor Seamus O'Dowd with three of his students . Kancho's Bo katas were taught with an interesting insight into the application of the Kanazawa No Bo Dai kata and its relationship to Shotokan techniques.

Sensei's Kevin Leigh (Kodokai), Anne Hastings (Mirai) and Ivor Garner (East Coast karate) were this year guests of honour at the annual course held by Karate Husovice of Brno, Czech Republic. The course was attended by students from all over Czech and with six students from Kodokai and Norwich coming too. The course was again a fantastic success with hospitality shown by Karate Husovice which as always is always appreciated, this year we were shown around local attractions and spent a night in Prague.

 The winter Gashuku is now a well established event and proving one of the highlights of the Karate calendar with over 65 students travelling from around the UK to enjoy excellent training and a fun weekend . This year we were privileged to have  Sensei's;  Anne Hastings 6th dan, Kevin Leigh 5th dan, Colin Needham 5th dan, Ivor Garner 5th dan, Lucie Marsh 4th dan.

The biggest International Summer Gashuku to date with over 75 students was held in Hemsby, Norfolk with students from all over the UK and the Czech Republic. This year we were again honoured to have sensei's Anne Hastings 6th dan, Colin Needham 5th dan, Ivor Garner 5th dan and Kevin Leigh 5th dan. The training was varied covering 5 different locations with the usual mix of Karate and team events plus the notorious sea training and 'King of the Hill'.
 
 2008 May - Kancho Kanazawa SKKIF Grading, Watford    (Photo)
This major grading event took place at the Kodokai St Thomas's dojo, and was attended by students from around the country. Congratulations to Cary Leigh, Paul Gray for gaining their 1st Dans also Shamek and Michael Godding for passing their 2nd dan grading.

Sensei Kevin Leigh again was invited to teach at the annual course at the Karate Husovice dojo in Brno, Czech Republic. The course was attended by students from all over the Czech Republic with senior UK instructors in attendance, Anne Hastings, Ivor Garner and Lucie Marsh, the course was again a fantastic success. The hospitality shown by Karate Husovice is always appreciated and this year we were shown around local attractions including Vienna.

The winter Gashuku is now proving one of the highlights of the Karate calendar with over 55 students travelling from around the UK to enjoy excellent training and a fun weekend . This year we were privileged to have training undertaken by Sensei's;  Anne Hastings, Kevin Leigh,  Colin Needham, Ivor Garner and Lucie Marsh.
 
 2007 November - Kancho Kanazawa Open course & SKKIF grading, Windsor 
Kodokai students trained this weekend with  Kancho Kanazawa, sensei Akhita, Daizo and Fumitoshi Kanazawa at Windsor. With students from around the world the course was  another great success which was followed by the SKKIF grading where  Kodokai students all successfully passed their Grading's. James Needham, Kristan Clark, Simone Lurze, Alex Stewart-White all passing 1st dan and Renauldo Gordon getting 2nd dan.
 
 2007 November - Sensei Daizo Kanazawa, Kodokai dojo   (Photo tour)
Kancho Kanazawa's son Daizo, visits Kodokai on his first ever visit to the UK. Sensei was also treated to a trip to Windsor and was shown around the historic Windsor castle.

The training was varied covering 5 different locations with the usual mix of Karate and team events plus the notorious sea training and 'King of the Hill'.
 
 2007 May - Czech Republic     (Photo tour) 
Sensei Leigh took a group of senior Kodokai black belts to train and run a course at the Karate Husovice dojo in Brno, Czech Republic for the second year running. The course was again well attended with over 70 students, many of whom had travelled from all over Czech. On the Sunday after the Kodokai entourage were shown round Bratislava and looked after by Karate Husovice in their usuall enthusiastic way.
 
 2007 April - Kancho Kanazawa Open course, Lillishall   (Photo)
Kodokai students trained this weekend with with Kancho Kanazawa, sensei Akhita and Nobuaki Kanazawa. With students from around the world the course was hard work but it was another highly successful course which was followed by the SKKIF grading where 11 Kodokai students all successfully passed their Grading's.
 
  2007 March - Winter Gashuku    (Photo tour) 
The Winter Gashuku took place at Hermanus Holiday Centre in Winterton on Sea Norfolk. This year was well attended with over 45 students and again a tremendous success, especially Saturday night and the infamous fancy dress disc
 
 2006 September - International Summer Gashuku    (Photo tour) 
The International Summer Gashuku was held in Hemsby, Norfolk with students from UK clubs and the Czech Republic.  This years head instructors were sensei's Kevin Leigh, Colin Needham and Steve Marriot. The training was varied covering many different locations with the usual mix of Karate and team events plus the notorious sea training.
 
 2006 November - SKIF World Championships, Tokyo Japan    (Photo)
Four Kodokai students attended for the SKIF World championships in Toky0 Japan as members of the UK SKKIF Karate squad. Phil Suddick 3rd dan, Ban Pritchard 2nd dan, Shamek 1st dan and Remus Nistorel 1st dan. With over seventy countries competing from around the world the standard was extremely high with all four of Kodokai competitors doing very well in their individual and team events.   
 
 2006 May - Kancho Kanazawa & Nobuaki Kanazawa, Kodokai dojo   (Photo tour) 
We were privileged to have Kancho Kanazawa teach at Watford's Kodokai dojo accompanied by his son Nobuaki Kanazawa 5th dan.
 
 2006 April - Czech Republic tour   (Photo tour) 
Sensei Kevin Leigh and sensei Bill Brown took 10 senior Kodokai black belts to train and run a course at the Karate Husovice dojo in Brno, Czech's second City. The course was a fantastic success with students travelling from all over the Czech Republic and it is now planned to make this a regular event due to it's popularity in Brno.
 
 2006 March - Kancho Kanazawa Open course, Watford   (Photo tour)
At the age of 74 Kancho taught over 400 Karate students who attended Watford leisure Centre for the Saturday course. Accompanied by Sensei's Murakami 6th Dan and Sensei Akita 5th dan, the UK again witnessed one of the the best Karate courses to date with students attending from all over the world.

15 Kodokai students attended with Kancho Kanazawa, sensei Murakami and Nobuaki Kanazawa. With many visitors from around the world the course was hard work but it was great weekend culminating with William Acquaah, Michael Godding and Chris Tyson passing their 1st dan grading and sensei Leigh achieving his 5th dan.
 
 2005 October - Sensei Anne Hastings, Kodokai dojo    (Photo)
We were privileged to have sensei Anne Hastings 6th dan visit the Kodokai dojo for the first time.  The X world Kata and Kumite champion, sensei Hastings captivated the dojo for the full 2 hours and we look forward to her visiting us again next year.   
 
 2005 September - Summer Gashuku    (Photo tour)
This years Summer Gashuku in Norfolk was another great success with extra activities to keep everyone occupied from beach volley ball to sand castle building contest!!! Attended this year by Kodokai and Manchester 'Swinton' club members, the sea training this year was a bit limited as the tides were too strong but we still managed to get a good soaking.
 
 2005 May - SKKIF National Championships, Watford    (Photos and results)
Sensei Kanazawa presided over this years event which took place at Watford leisure centre on Sunday 8th May. The events took just over 8 hours to complete with a  interlude of traditional Chinese dancing by a local Chinese dance school.

At the age of 74 Sensei still managed to attract over 450 Karate students from all over the UK and many from Europe and the US who attended Watford leisure Centre for the Saturday course. Accompanied by Sensei's Ryusho Suzuki 5th Dan and Sensei Akita 5th dan, this was the biggest course held in Europe so far.
 
 2005 May - Kancho Kanazawa SKKIF Grading
This major grading event took place at the Kodokai St Thomas's dojo, and was attended by students from around the country. Congratulations to Danny Leigh and Remus Nistorel for gaining their 1st Dans.

This major grading event took place at Windsor, and was attended by students from around the country and an especially large number from Kodokai. Congratulations to Mathew Clark  for gaining his 1st dan and Bryn Green, Julie Crawford, Fleming Jetmar and Adrian Holt for gaining their 2nd Dans.

Great to see Sensei Kanazawa at the Kodokai dojo again twice in one year!!. Attended by over 50 students, Sensei was thoroughly entertained by and looked after again by the Kodokai students.

Kodokai once again welcomed Kancho Kanazawa at the Kodokai dojo . Sensei still outshines most people half his age with technique and power. Kancho  and his son Nobuaki also carried out a senior SKKIF grading at the Kodokai dojo the following week.

With Sensei's K Leigh 4th dan and C Needham 4th dan the weekend was a great success and the weather and attendance  superb. With additional tuition from Sensei's Shaun McCartan, Graham Riley and Bruce Rice. The pink belt was awarded this year to Guy Quint & Ben Pritchard received the William Acquaah Award.

The championships were held at Watford leisure centre with the events taking just over 8 hours to complete, there was a welcome interlude of traditional Chinese dancing by a local dance school.

Kancho Kanazawa made another welcome visit to the Kodokai Watford dojo. The course was well attended with over 60 students benefiting from the great masters teachings.

The Gashuku was again a great success with everyone enjoying the mix of training and social activities, especially the now infamous Viking night where every one lets their Viking other half to the fore. Training was undertaken by Sensei's: K Leigh, P Sheppard, C Needham, G Riley & S McCartan.

We were honoured to have Kancho Kanazawa teaching at our dojo in Watford. Kancho was on fine form and was as inspiring as usual, we focused on basics to accommodate the lower grades and allow the higher grades to try to perfect their stances.

Despite the bad weather and the high winds this years Summer Gashuku was again a great success, we still managed to train in the sea and the beach which is always the highlight of the Summer Gashuku.
